In the Serenth galaxy, there are three types of gas masks. These are referred to as "Type 1", "Type 2" and "Type 3".
Serenth gas masks normally cover the entire face, though some only cover the lower half of the face (these are sometimes referred to as "respirators"). While protecting the wearer from inhaling poisonous gases or biological agents, it does not protect them from gases that can be absorbed through the skin.
Rioters and police alike use gas masks, as do painters when using paint canisters. Explorers who venture into areas with asbestos and other hazardous materials also wear gas masks.
While most gas masks have two small, circular eye windows made of polycarbonate, masks with large, full-face windows are very rare.
Some people in the Serenth galaxy wear gas masks for no reason, or to hide scars, or other reasons.
Type 1 gas masks had one or two filters attached to the face mask; however, rare type 1 gas masks had three filters instead. Each filter would last up to twelve hours.
Type 2 gas masks had a large filter, connected to the face mask with a hose. These filters would last up to twenty-four hours.
Type 3 gas masks were first created in the Newerth year 1980, when they rendered both type 1 and type 2 gas masks obsolete. Type 3 gas masks were magically enchanted to provide an endless amount of breathable air to the wearer - as such, type 3 gas masks do not require filters, although most people still wear filters with their gas masks. Type 3 gas masks can be worn even when diving underwater.
Type 3 gas masks were enforced at schools around the time they were first created; to this day, some Newerth schools still require gas masks to be worn as part of the official uniform.
